About Course

PQE 001 – History of Education is a foundational course designed to introduce prospective professional educators to the origin, growth, and development of education from ancient times to the modern era. This course explores key historical milestones, philosophical influences, indigenous educational systems, and the evolution of formal education in Nigeria and globally.

Learners will gain insights into how education has shaped societies, the major educational reform movements, and the contributions of notable educators and philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Comenius, Dewey, and others. Special emphasis is placed on traditional African education, Islamic and Western education in Nigeria, missionary and colonial influences, and post-independence educational development.

This course will equip teachers with a strong historical foundation, enabling them to appreciate the value of education in national development and to understand the roots of modern educational policies and practices in Nigeria. As this course is designed in line with the TRCN PQE curriculum, it is summarised to point out the key expected examination areas for smart studies.

Module 1: Introduction to the History of Education
Definition and scope. Importance and relevance to teacher training. Historical methodology.

Module 4: Western Education in Nigeria
In this module, the following topics will be discussed in details: • Advent of missionary education • Colonial policies and their impact • Education ordinances and reforms

Module 5: Global History of Education
In this module, you will gain deep insight on: • Educational contributions of ancient civilizations (Egypt, Greece, Rome) • European educational history and reforms • Prominent philosophers: Plato, Aristotle, Comenius, Rousseau, Dewey, etc.

Module 6: Post-Independence Educational Developments in Nigeria
This modules discusses insightfully the following • 1969 Curriculum Conference • Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Basic Education (UBE) • National Policy on Education • Contemporary challenges and reforms . Nigerian System of Education: Pre , Post and Current

Module 7: Contemporary Relevance of Historical Knowledge
